usually its not much of a difference, I made my full 3'' system on my last prelude for just over $500, that was the custom DC header, 2.5-3'' testpipe, 2 12'' flowmaster resonators the Kteller 3'' piping kit and a vibrant muffler.

billy runs a 3" on his mildly modified NA engine (stock cams, stockish bore, stock stroke, stockish compression, etc). I believe David has a 3" as well with the same lack of mods and my car will also be getting the 3" treatment with few mods.

Edit: I should note that Billy's, David's, and my car are not street driven, so the fact that a 3" is fine for us, does not mean it is fine for you (also, our cars have H22s, so if we are talking F22 or H23, the size will need to come down).

I thought I would do a quick search to find you guys a little relevant info on exhaust velocity. I think this little article does a pretty good job explaining it, even if they are referring to Miatas. http://www.miata.net/garage/KnowYourCar/S4_Back.html
yeah that was the exact link i was about to post up, mine was a mildly modified street driven DD
Here is the 3'' setup on a n/a h22 with basic mods, basically the same exhaust that I had, just different resonators and testpipe

From what I have read, backpressure is bad in any FI application. But if you run the biggest exhaust on N/A to cut out all backpressure, you lose Tq along with sucking cold air and burn the valves.

Regardless, the changes are minute and not very noticeable. Too big on an exhaust, the exhaust flow is slow and cools down. To small, it's restricting. There is no "best exhaust" as you have to take into accounts bends and even dents if there are any, if you want to get that specific.

Define back pressure.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backpressure

Quote:
Back pressure usually refers to the pressure exerted on a moving fluid by obstructions or tight bends in the confinement vessel along which it is moving, such as piping or air vents, against its direction of flow. For example, an automotive exhaust muffler with a particularly high number of twists, bends, turns and right angles could be described as having particularly high back pressure [1]. Back pressure, in the exhaust sense of the term, of a four-stroke engine is usually termed as being a "bad thing" for performance; however, in the interest of reducing exhaust sound to levels allowable by public noise ordinances, back pressure can be regulated using systems from simple butterfly valves to fully computer controlled units sensing pressure in the exhaust pipe itself.

In a two-stroke engine however, a certain amount of exhaust backpressure is needed to prevent unburned fuel/air mixture passing right through the cylinders into the exhaust.
Emphasis mine.

also what would be a good high flow cat?

GBOGH!!!

I'd look around, you can probably find a good quality used header for around the same price (maybe a little more) as a crap eBay header. Remember, keeping your long term goals in mind is always a good thing to do.
